Chapter 25 part-1

CHAPTER 25

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

Part 1

Darkness swallowed Reach Prime.

Not the ordinary darkness of failed lights.

This darkness had weight.

It pressed against the skin.

Filled lungs.

Slid beneath armor.

For one impossible moment, every sound inside the fortress vanished with the light.

No alarms.

No engines.

No voices.

No wounded crying in the medical halls.

No generators cycling beneath the floors.

Nothing.

Then the heartbeat came again.

THOOM.

The impact shook dust from the ceiling.

Emergency strips flickered weakly along the floor, burning a dull red that illuminated boots, discarded equipment, and the lower halves of soldiers frozen throughout the fortress.

The light did not reach their faces.

Tobias tightened both hands around VoidSmasher.

"Status."

His voice echoed strangely through the anchor-analysis room.

Not an echo.

Another voice.

The same word.

Older.

Farther away.

Status...

Kronin slowly turned toward the ceiling.

"I did not like that."

"Join the crowd," TailWhip muttered.

Nano's silver body became the room's only reliable light.

IONA-7 still gripped the edge of the projection table.

Rifter held one shaking hand toward the nearest portal ring.

The portal hadn't shut down.

It remained open.

But the familiar blue energy was gone.

A thick violet mist rolled inside the ring.

Something moved beyond it.

Not a place.

Not yet.

Tobias activated his command channel.

"Reach Prime, report."

Only static answered.

Then every frequency erupted simultaneously.

"Command, lower hangars are dark!"

"Medical Sector Three has emergency power!"

"Portal Control has lost manual override!"

"Titan Bay reports independent core activation!"

"Containment breach in civilian shelter Delta!"

"Repeat!" Tobias barked.

The frightened operator struggled through heavy interference.

"I said... something... is inside the walls!"

A scream.

Then silence.

Ozzy's voice immediately cut across the command net.

"Delta moving."

DoubleBack answered before Tobias could respond.

"Alpha's with him."

Asp had already drawn both pistols.

"The overlap has reached the fortress."

Atsila looked toward the glowing tip of his spear.

Its blue light no longer radiated outward.

Instead, it bent toward the nearest portal like a compass needle.

"The anchors found us."

Nano stared at the projection.

The world map had vanished.

In its place floated Reach Prime.

Around it...

Another structure.

Massive black towers.

Bridges suspended over endless furnaces.

Chains disappearing into darkness.

The Black Foundry.

Both fortresses occupied the same physical space.

Not completely.

Not yet.

Nano's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"It isn't transporting the Foundry..."

Tobias looked at him.

"Then what?"

Nano slowly shook his head.

"It's removing the difference between them."

THOOM.

The wall behind Killshot split open.

Not cracked.

Opened.

Steel peeled backward like living flesh.

Heat blasted into the room.

Beyond the opening stood a bridge stretching over a river of molten violet fire.

Towering black structures climbed toward a sky that did not belong to Earth.

Killshot immediately raised her rifle.

"That definitely wasn't there a minute ago."

Kronin drew both weapons.

"I appreciate your gift for observation."

The opening widened.

Reach Prime changed.

Support beams twisted into rib-like arches.

Electrical conduits thickened into pulsing black veins.

Steel walls merged seamlessly with ancient volcanic stone.

The ceiling stretched upward until it disappeared into smoke.

The Black Foundry wasn't invading Reach Prime.

It was growing through it.

Tobias stepped backward.

"Everyone out."

Nano looked up.

"We're losing invaluable data."

"We're losing the room."

No one argued.

The corridors outside had become almost unrecognizable.

One intersection remained polished military steel.

The next had become black volcanic stone.

Doorways opened into places that couldn't possibly exist.

A supply room now overlooked a bottomless abyss lit by rivers of molten violet rock.

A maintenance tunnel ended inside a cathedral-sized forge.

Gravity itself seemed uncertain.

The floor shifted beneath every step.

Reality groaned around them.

The eastern medical hall had become a battlefield.

Black columns erupted through reinforced flooring between rows of hospital beds.

Heavy chains now hung where ventilation ducts had once run.

The far wall no longer existed.

Instead, an enormous furnace chamber stretched beyond it, glowing with impossible heat.

Patch and Bonesaw shoved medical carts toward the central evacuation lifts while HellGuard troopers formed defensive lines around the wounded.

Three civilians stood perfectly still near the observation ward.

Their heads remained bowed.

Their shadows pointed in opposite directions.

Ozzy entered with Delta Team.

Drog lumbered beside him, axe already resting across one shoulder.

Bonesaw pointed.

"They were cleared!"

Ozzy never lowered his rifle.

"Not anymore."

The first civilian lifted his head.

His eyes glowed violet.

When he opened his mouth...

Black smoke poured out.

Drog crossed the room in two strides.

The flat of his axe struck the man square in the chest.

The civilian flew through one of the new black pillars hard enough to shatter stone.

Bonesaw glared.

"Nonlethal!"

Drog watched the body disappear into violet smoke.

"That was nonlethal."

"For you!"

The second civilian lunged.

A Delta rifleman fired into the floor beneath her.

The energy blast launched her backward without striking her directly.

She landed awkwardly.

Didn't stay down.

The third civilian never moved.

His skin simply began splitting apart.

Thin cracks raced across his face.

Then his neck.

Then his chest.

Violet light shined through every opening.

Ozzy's expression hardened.

"Move the wounded!"

The man's body exploded.

Not outward.

Into arms.

Dozens of long black limbs erupted from his torso, shoulders and back, clawing toward nearby hospital beds.

Drog planted himself between the creature and the nearest patients.

His axe swept once.

Three arms hit the floor.

Six more immediately replaced them.

"Energy weapons!" Ozzy shouted.

Delta opened fire.

Blue-white plasma tore the creature apart.

It collapsed.

Then every severed piece began crawling back together.

Ozzy sighed.

"Of course it does."

A brilliant bolt of energy slammed into the remains from farther down the corridor.

The creature vaporized.

Every moving fragment disappeared.

DoubleBack emerged through the smoke with Alpha Team behind him.

His Drael'Var arm had transformed into a sleek black plasma cannon running the length of his forearm.

"You looked like you needed help."

Ozzy fired another burst toward movement climbing across the ceiling.

"I looked handsome."

"You look like ten miles of bad road."

"So... normal."

Despite everything, DoubleBack almost smiled.

Elsewhere inside Reach Prime...

The Road Demon roared through the lower transit corridors.

J-Luck stood inside the command compartment, gripping the overhead rail as the massive vehicle bounced over cracked flooring.

"Grimm."

The scout's voice answered immediately.

"I'm here."

"Talk to me."

There was a long pause.

"I can't."

"...What?"

"There isn't a route anymore."

Valhalla leaned over the controls.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I'm looking at three hallways occupying the same space."

Raven rotated the roof-mounted cannon.

"They're all showing on sensors."

"They're all physically here."

Valhalla scratched his beard.

"...Well that's inconvenient."

J-Luck looked ahead.

"What isn't trying to kill us?"

Grimm answered honestly.

"Still checking."

The Road Demon burst through another blast door.

Everything changed.

Steel walls disappeared.

Black stone replaced them.

An ash-filled sky stretched overhead.

Massive chains hung between distant towers.

Raven immediately spotted movement.

"Contact."

Dark figures crawled across the towers.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

J-Luck leaned forward.

"Ours?"

Raven squeezed the trigger.

The heavy cannon thundered.

"No."

Bodies exploded into violet smoke.

None of them struck the ground.

Instead...

The smoke drifted toward Reach Prime.

Toward the civilians.

Grimm's voice sharpened.

"They're following us!"

Riptide cut across the command channel.

"Then quit leading them to the damn shelters!"

J-Luck pointed ahead.

"Valhalla!"

The driver grinned.

"I know."

The Road Demon accelerated.

Behind it...

The smoke followed.

Far above...

Inside the Titan maintenance bay...

Four colossal war machines stood silent beneath repair cranes.

Then...

Every core ignited.

White light instantly shifted...

To violet.

One Titan took a step.

Then another.

Maintenance crews scattered in every direction.

The nearest Titan slowly rotated its massive rotary cannon...

Toward the interior of Reach Prime.

Toward the civilian districts.

Asp stepped into the observation gallery.

"No."

He opened a direct command channel.

"Titan Three. Stand down."

Nothing.

The cannon continued spinning.

Hydraulic motors screamed.

Targeting systems locked.

Then...

The damaged Fourth Titan moved.

Its crippled leg tore free from repair braces.

Hydraulic fluid sprayed across the bay.

With one violent shove...

It slammed itself into Titan Three.

Both enormous machines crashed into a reinforced wall.

Titan Three fired.

The blast carved through the ceiling instead of the evacuation corridors beyond.

Asp stared through the glass.

Titan Four had no pilot.

No crew.

No active control systems.

It should have been dead.

Instead...

It was fighting.

Protecting Reach Prime.

A distorted mechanical voice crackled across the maintenance bay.

Barely understandable.

"...PACK...HOLDS..."

Asp narrowed his eyes.

Titan Four forced itself upright on one functioning leg.

Its Iron Fang insignia glowed brilliant white.

Titan Three charged.

The two giants collided again.

Asp opened every Iron Fang frequency.

"All Titan crews..."

He never took his eyes off the battle below.

"Deploy immediately."

"Manual control only."

"Sever every network connection."

One of his officers hesitated.

"And Titan Four?"

Asp watched the crippled machine pin its corrupted brother against the wall.

"...Leave it."

"Sir?"

"It has already chosen."
