Chapter 25 part-2

CHAPTER 25

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE

Part 2

The overlap spread faster than anyone could predict.

Entire sections of Reach Prime no longer obeyed the laws that had built them.

One hallway stretched for nearly a mile before folding back into itself.

An elevator opened onto a balcony overlooking a city-sized forge.

Barracks became crypts.

Machine shops became cathedrals of black steel.

Some soldiers reported seeing themselves walking in opposite directions before the visions vanished.

Others swore the walls whispered their names.

Reality had stopped deciding what it wanted to be.

The central civilian sector erupted into chaos.

Thousands of civilians crowded beneath emergency floodlights while HellGuard troopers struggled to maintain order.

Children cried.

Generators groaned.

Engineers rushed from one failing support system to another.

Rifter stood in the center of the primary portal nexus.

Sweat poured down his face.

Around him, dozens of unstable portals flickered in and out of existence.

Each one threatened to tear another hole through Reach Prime.

IONA-7 moved like living lightning.

She appeared beside one portal...

Discharged it...

Vanished...

Then reappeared across the chamber before another rupture could widen.

Every burst of power left glowing blue fractures racing beneath her skin.

Nano worked three holographic consoles simultaneously.

"No!"

He slammed one projection away.

"The resonance is increasing!"

"It should be collapsing!"

"It shouldn't be stabilizing!"

Rifter looked over his shoulder.

"It wants to stay open!"

Nano nodded.

"I know!"

"I don't know why!"

The floor beneath the civilian shelters buckled.

A massive black pillar erupted upward.

Not quickly.

Relentlessly.

Steel flooring bent around it.

Concrete exploded outward.

Hundreds of civilians screamed.

Force-5 reached it first.

He planted both feet.

Shouldered beneath the rising structure.

And pushed.

The pillar stopped.

For barely a second.

Muscles tightened across his body.

Golden energy ignited beneath his skin.

Veins glowed like molten metal.

The pillar continued rising.

Force-5 roared.

Every ounce of kinetic force driving into him...

Stored.

Contained.

His armor began cracking.

IONA-7 saw it immediately.

"No!"

She blinked beside him.

"You'll overload!"

"I'm already there!"

"Then give it to me!"

She slammed one glowing hand into his back.

The stored energy erupted.

A tidal wave of golden power surged from Force-5 into IONA-7.

Blue-white lightning exploded across the chamber.

Portal rings screamed.

Every unstable fracture compressed inward.

Reality shuddered.

For one impossible heartbeat...

Reach Prime returned.

Steel.

Concrete.

Lights.

Walls.

Everything normal.

Then...

The Black Foundry slammed back into existence even harder than before.

The shockwave hurled everyone off their feet.

Everyone...

Except Tobias.

VoidSmasher pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then black energy crawled across the ancient runes carved into its head.

Not corruption.

Recognition.

A familiar voice echoed from deep within the weapon.

IRONWARDEN...

Tobias slowly lowered his eyes.

"The Void."

Kronin blinked.

"You hear him?"

"Yes."

"...Good?"

Tobias watched black energy swirl beneath the hammer's surface.

"With him?"

A faint smile crossed his face despite everything.

"It's usually complicated."

Reality split directly in front of him.

A crack opened in empty air.

Black fingers pushed through.

Scarred.

Burned.

Bleeding.

The hand reached toward VoidSmasher.

Tobias never stepped back.

The fingers wrapped around the hammer.

Power detonated through the chamber.

Everyone else disappeared.

Tobias stood somewhere else.

Half inside Reach Prime.

Half inside the Black Foundry.

The Void hung suspended inside living darkness.

Black tendrils pierced his shoulders.

Wrapped around his chest.

Disappeared into his back.

Every breath looked painful.

His body bled black fire into the living walls surrounding him.

Yet...

He smiled.

"You look terrible," Tobias said.

The Void laughed.

"You always mistake bravery for humor."

"I've been told."

"You've been told correctly."

The Void coughed.

Black blood splashed across the living floor.

The Consumer immediately absorbed it.

Its voice rolled through the chamber.

YOU WILL BREAK.

The Void ignored it.

His eyes never left Tobias.

"It isn't opening portals."

"We figured that much out."

"It isn't invading."

"We figured that out too."

"It is building."

Tobias's expression hardened.

"Building what?"

"The beginning."

Silence.

The Void slowly lifted one trembling hand.

Every tendril holding him tightened.

"It consumes worlds..."

"...to build itself."

Tobias looked back toward Reach Prime through the fracture.

"The anchors..."

"...are the skeleton."

"The Hallowed..."

"...the blood."

"The fractures..."

"...the nervous system."

The Void smiled again.

"You learn quickly."

Tobias tightened his grip on VoidSmasher.

"How do we stop it?"

The Void actually laughed.

Not mockingly.

Almost sadly.

"You don't."

The chamber shook violently.

The Consumer's grip tightened around him.

Black tendrils wrapped around his throat.

Bones cracked.

Still...

The Void forced himself to continue speaking.

"You survive..."

"...the birth."

His fingers began slipping away from the hammer.

"...then kill..."

"...what comes after."

The fracture began closing.

Tobias stepped forward.

"Void!"

For the first time...

The Void's smile disappeared.

His voice became quiet.

Almost human.

"Don't waste this chance."

The fracture snapped shut.

Back inside Reach Prime...

Tobias staggered backward.

The hammer cooled immediately.

The black energy vanished.

Kronin caught him before he hit the floor.

"You alright?"

Tobias nodded slowly.

"No."

He looked toward Nano.

"The Consumer isn't trying to invade."

Nano looked up.

"I know."

"It's trying to become."

Neither man liked how that sounded.

Far below...

Something answered the heartbeat.

THOOM.

Not inside Reach Prime.

Below it.

Much farther below.

Deep beneath the fortress.

Ancient mechanisms awakened.

Massive gears turned for the first time in ages beyond memory.

Stone ground against stone.

Something...

Was opening.

Nano looked toward the floor.

"You felt that?"

Everyone did.

Elsewhere...

Inside the Black Foundry...

StormFire stood silently beside Eclipse.

The Consumer's living walls pulsed around them.

Black veins now spread through sections of the Foundry.

The Void's corruption.

His infection.

His resistance.

Eclipse watched the spreading darkness carefully.

"He is stronger than expected."

Ash Widow folded her arms.

"I can finish him."

"No."

Jayden Barrett stepped forward.

"I can."

"No."

Shadowbane remained silent.

Both axes rested across one shoulder.

Lyra watched the spreading black veins.

"If the infection reaches the core..."

Eclipse finished the thought.

"...the Foundry changes."

No one spoke.

StormFire stared into the living wall.

A sound drifted through his thoughts.

Broken.

Static.

Laughter.

Cards striking a table.

A bottle opening.

Then...

A voice.

You still owe me that drink...

StormFire's eyes widened.

Only slightly.

His hands tightened.

The memory vanished.

He frowned.

"...Who..."

Eclipse turned.

"What?"

StormFire looked toward her.

The question disappeared before he could finish it.

"...Nothing."

But somewhere...

Very deep...

Something inside him had just moved.

The Black Foundry trembled.

The Consumer spoke.

Not with anger.

With certainty.

THE WORLD OPENS.

Eclipse lowered her head.

"It begins."

StormFire looked toward the living horizon.

The black veins continued spreading.

Very slowly.

Almost unnoticed.

The Void had smiled for a reason.

And for the first time...

Eclipse wondered if she should have been more afraid of the prisoner...

Than the prison.
