Chapter25 part-3
CHAPTER 25
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE
Part 3
The heartbeat came one final time.
THOOM.
Then...
Everything stopped.
The black stone vanished.
The furnaces disappeared.
The endless bridges collapsed into nothing.
Reach Prime's steel walls snapped back into existence.
Concrete replaced volcanic rock.
The veins running through the fortress withdrew into ordinary electrical conduits.
The impossible sky disappeared.
Emergency lights flickered overhead.
Reality...
Returned.
For several long seconds, no one moved.
No one spoke.
The silence was almost unsettling after the chaos.
Then...
A scream shattered the world.
Not through speakers.
Not through radios.
Not through the command network.
It came from everywhere.
Through the walls.
Through the floor.
Through every portal ring.
Through every fracture that had touched the world.
Through VoidSmasher itself.
A scream unlike anything any of them had ever heard.
Agony.
Pure.
Ancient.
It wasn't rage.
It wasn't anger.
It was pain.
Real pain.
Every person inside Reach Prime instinctively covered their ears.
Some fell to one knee.
Several civilians cried out.
Even the Titans in the maintenance bay froze where they stood.
The scream continued.
Long.
Unbroken.
Impossible.
Then...
Silence.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody had to.
Every single person knew whose voice they had heard.
The Void.
VoidSmasher pulsed once.
The black energy running through its runes flickered...
Then disappeared.
Tobias stared at the hammer for a long moment.
Whatever had just happened...
The Void had paid for it.
He slowly lifted the weapon onto his shoulder.
The commander's voice returned.
Calm.
Controlled.
Exactly what everyone around him needed.
"Start preparing repairs."
The words echoed through the command channel.
"Every damaged section gets inspected before anyone moves back into service."
He looked toward Patch and Bonesaw.
"Anybody needing medical attention gets it immediately."
Both medics were already moving.
"Understood."
The fortress sprang back to life.
Engineers sprinted toward damaged sectors carrying tool kits and portable welders.
Medical teams rushed into the civilian shelters.
Delta immediately began securing unstable corridors.
Alpha established defensive checkpoints around the damaged portal network.
Iron Fang engineers moved toward the Titan bays.
FuryHounds began escorting frightened civilians back toward secure sectors.
Reach Prime was wounded.
But alive.
Tobias looked across the gathering commanders.
"Echo Team."
Max stepped forward.
Rozlin rested her spear against one shoulder.
Quinlin folded his mechanical arms.
There was one space among them that no one acknowledged.
Storm's absence remained painfully obvious.
Tobias continued.
"Nano."
The silver scientist immediately left the ruined projection table.
"Omega Prime."
Force-5 stepped forward beside IONA-7.
Rifter wrapped fresh bandages around his bleeding hands while joining them.
"Ozzy."
The Delta commander answered with a nod.
"DoubleBack."
Alpha's commander stepped beside Ozzy.
His Drael'Var arm remained unusually quiet.
"Morvax."
The Cinderborn emerged from the smoke-filled corridor.
Heat shimmered around the cracks in his volcanic skin.
Tobias adjusted VoidSmasher across his shoulder.
"With me."
No one asked where.
They already knew.
The Cathedral.
A soft burst of static whispered inside Ozzy's helmet.
His head turned slightly.
A private channel.
No one else heard it.
A familiar voice spoke quietly.
"Eyes still on target."
Proffett.
Ozzy answered just as quietly.
"Good."
A brief pause.
Then...
"Eyes stay on target."
"Do not engage."
A single chuckle came back over the channel.
"Thought you'd say that."
The transmission ended.
DoubleBack looked sideways.
"Problem?"
Ozzy shrugged once.
"Don't know yet."
"But Proffett doesn't waste radio traffic."
DoubleBack nodded.
"Fair."
Tobias had heard enough.
Not the entire conversation.
Just enough.
He looked toward Ozzy.
"Proffett?"
Ozzy nodded.
"Affirmative."
"He still has eyes on the target."
Tobias thought for only a second.
"If he says they're staying put..."
"...then they aren't our immediate problem."
Ozzy agreed.
"They won't stay that way forever."
"No."
Tobias looked toward the corridor leading beneath Reach Prime.
"But they can wait another hour."
The walk through Reach Prime was quieter than any battlefield.
The wounded were everywhere.
Medics worked without stopping.
Engineers welded broken bulkheads back together.
Iron Fang mechanics inspected damaged Titans beside HellGuard technicians.
No one cared whose uniform anyone wore anymore.
The alliance had stopped being political.
It had become survival.
As Tobias passed...
Soldiers stood.
Not because they had been ordered to.
Because they wanted to.
Some saluted.
Others simply nodded.
One FuryHound raised two fingers.
An Iron Fang warrior struck a fist against his chest.
Tobias acknowledged every one of them.
No speeches.
No celebration.
They had survived.
That would have to be enough.
For now.
Deep beneath Reach Prime...
The temperature changed.
The air became older.
Every corridor was carved from stone instead of reinforced steel.
Ancient symbols covered the walls.
Some glowed faintly.
Others had gone dark long before humanity had existed.
Morvax studied them quietly.
"I've never seen workmanship like this."
Nano knelt beside one inscription.
"It isn't workmanship."
"What?"
"It grew."
Everyone looked at him.
Nano ran silver fingers across the stone.
"This wasn't carved."
"It formed."
Even Rifter looked unsettled.
"That's impossible."
Nano slowly stood.
"So was everything we witnessed today."
No one argued.
The corridor ended.
Ahead stood two enormous stone doors.
Hundreds of feet tall.
Covered in countless runes.
At their center...
The symbol of the Cathedral.
No one touched them.
No one needed to.
A low grinding echoed through the chamber.
Ancient gears hidden somewhere inside the mountain began turning.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
The runes awakened one by one.
Gold.
White.
Blue.
The massive doors slowly began opening.
Cold golden light spilled through the widening gap.
Not warm.
Not comforting.
Ancient.
Patient.
Waiting.
No one spoke.
Even Kronin remained silent.
Tobias tightened his grip on VoidSmasher.
The hammer vibrated gently in his hand.
Like it recognized what waited beyond.
The doors continued opening.
Darkness lay beyond the golden light.
Not empty darkness.
Depth.
Endless depth.
Something inside the Cathedral had awakened.
Something that had waited longer than history itself.
Tobias took one step forward.
Then another.
Without turning around...
He spoke quietly.
"Let's find out why it woke up."
He crossed the threshold.
Echo Team followed.
Nano.
Omega Prime.
Ozzy.
DoubleBack.
Morvax.
One by one...
They disappeared into the ancient light.
The great Cathedral doors remained open for only a few more seconds.
Then...
They began closing.
Slowly.
Relentlessly.
Stone against stone.
The sound echoed through the mountain.
Through Reach Prime.
Through the world itself.
BOOM.
Darkness.
END OF BOOK ONE
The war had only been the warning.
